I had to prove myself.

Lainey needed me, and I was sorely lacking in skills and knowledge when it came to Omegas as well as women. Of course, I knew the basics that everyone was taught in school and biology classes, but I’d never been interested in women. The trauma I’d suffered at the hands of a woman who was supposed to love me unconditionally left me with a bitter taste in my mouth. It wasn’t that I’d written off all women or didn’t find some women I was comfortable being around. The core of the matter was I never thought I had a chance past basic friendship.

The guys would yell at me for thinking this, but who would want an emotional basket case like me?

Now here I was in a limousine with a woman in my lap. Not just any woman, an Omega who I was scent matched with. The need to bury my face in the back of her neck and lick her skin, knowing Lainey would taste as amazing as she smelled, was hard to resist. Right now, it wasn’t about me but about her. As I held her, I could feel that last wave of her heat growing stronger, having still been denied a knot. We needed to maintain it until we got home, and it was safe for us to give her that. When a knot expands, locking the Omega to the Alpha, it could last anywhere from fifteen minutes to forty-five, depending on the situation.

Meaning if any of us knotted her here or in the restaurant, we’d literally be stuck for a minimum of fifteen minutes. That was a risk none of us were willing to make with something so precious to us. Not every Alpha had a scent-paired Omega, and with so many people spread out all over the world, it wasn’t always a guarantee you’d be able to find them. Thus, it was why our culture as a whole viewed them almost as soulmates, a person who completed their pack in a way no one else could. How true all that was, I didn’t know, but I was coming to realize there was a special connection with Lainey.

I wouldn’t say I was instantly madly in love with her, but my instinct was to protect, nurture, and give affection to Lainey. Everything in me wanted to provide for her. While that might sound like an absolute cop-out to many, I would tell them I didn’t believe it either until this very moment. It’s like how people try to describe the instantaneous love you have for a child the moment it’s born. You had no reason to feel those emotions, but our biology knew it had to do something to protect this small life that couldn’t protect itself. Therefore, it triggers a bond between parent and child to ensure that the child can grow to become an adult furthering the species.

However, even knowing this was a biological response toward Lainey, and we had a lot
